A Zombie’s gotta eat
The hive mind controlling the infected experimented endlessly with the human form. Some hosts were sculpted with delicate metallic rose gold skin, iridescent in the sunlight. Their bodies sprouted graceful fungal fins and quills, almost like wings, or opulent crowns that served to lure in victims and disperse virulent spores. Though zombie-like in their behavior, they moved with an unearthly grace and beauty.
It is speculated that the metallic sheen of their skin came from a diet high in shrimp and krill, rich in carotenoids that built up in their tissues. The hive mind discovered that certain diets produced desirable aesthetic effects in the host and engineered encounters with prey to achieve them. These rose gold hybrids were a stunning example of the fungal hive mind’s mastery over the human form as artistic medium.
Some of the rose gold hybrids developed a symbiotic relationship with birds, specifically flamingos. The zombies protect the birds from predators in exchange for being led to shrim-rich feeding grounds. This surprising partnership displayed the cunning adaptability of these new fungal creatures and their ability to cooperate with other species for mutual benefit. The future of this world belonged to those able to forge unexpected alliances and make the most of new circumstances.
