Dawn of the Clickers

The Last of Us introduced us to a new type of zombie – victims of the deadly cordyceps fungus. Though their bodies were disfigured and grotesque, bursting with fungal growths, the infected still retained at least parts of their human minds and consciousnesses.

As the infection spread, it devastated the human population and marked the beginning of a new evolutionary branch.

This series of images discover what might happen when human DNA, evolved over millions of years, fights back against the fungal invaders. The result is the emergence of a new kind of human-fungal hybrid, often beautiful, always clever and deadly in their early development. Though they began as monsters, through evolution and integration with uninfected humans, they became the harbingers of a new, hybrid humanity.

The struggle between the infected and uninfected humans pushed both groups to evolve and adapt in order to survive. The infected, driven by the fungal DNA, developed enhanced physical abilities and heightened senses that made them formidable predators. Meanwhile, uninfected humans harnessed their intelligence and ingenuity to create weapons, fortifications and alliances that allowed them to endure.

Over time, as the infected hybrids became more integrated with human society, their monstrous qualities diminished. The fungal DNA within them was tamed through exposure to human culture and compassion. Eventually, these hybrid beings came to represent a new stage of human evolution – one that combined the strengths of both species to create a more resilient and capable form of intelligence.
