Trapped
Trapped within their own bodies, the infected could only watch in horror as the fungus took control. At first, it was subtle – a twitch of a finger or turn of the head that they didn’t initiate. But soon, the fungus had mastery over their limbs and began using the body to spread its spores to new hosts.
Though the mind remained intact, it was now just a passenger unable to steer the vehicle of its own flesh.
As the infection progressed, the fungus began reshaping its host to better suit its needs. Delicate fungal plates emerged from the skin, displaying colorful spore prints that wafted through the air with every movement.
Some hosts sprouted additional limbs, better for grasping prey, while others developed quills and barbs as a defense.
The human form was now just raw material for the fungus to sculpt into deadly works of art.
In time, the minds of the infected adapted to their circumstances. No longer fighting the invader, they formed a symbiotic partnership with the fungus that gave them a semblance of control and purpose once again. The human and fungus worked together, using human cleverness and fungal adaptations to become apex predators. They emerged from the ruins of humanity as a new race – not quite human or fungus but a hybrid of both. The future belonged to these cunning creatures and their descendants, a new page in evolution with an unwritten end.
